Online Quantitative Questionnaire– Analysis

My audience quantitative questionnaire went live on my facebook page on 21st October 2014, and it was removed on the 26th October for analysis. There were 23 responses from individual participants, who responded over the five days the questionnaire was live. The objective of this questionnaire was to establish the demographics of an attracted audience, their viewing preferences along with how they perceived and connected with the genre ‘Social Realism’.

1. What is your gender?
Eleven male and twelve females participated. I was pleased to have received an even response from both genders, subsequently I should have a viewpoint that is not biased or favoured by one particular gender.

2. What is your age range?
From the data recorded, there were no responses from either the, under 16 and over 60 categories. Fifty-two percent of my participants were in the age range category of 16- 18 and twenty-two percent were in the age range category of 19-21. Therefore, twenty-six percent of my participants were from the older age categories. Statistical data shows that:

The modal participant is in the age range of 16-18

The mean participant was 24.7 years old

The range of participants’ age was 44 year old.

Online social networking sites seem to attract a younger and more computer literate participant and this may lead to limited view points with reference to other questions

3. What is your marital status?
Seventy-four percent of my participants claimed they were single. This question statistically bears relevance to the previous age question. All the participants who were 22 and over selected the married status.

4. Please specify your ethnicity?
From the twenty three participants who took part in this questionnaire, there was one single male aged 16-18, who decided that his ethnicity was a night elf! From the rest of his responses, I can safely suggest that his recorded data was submitted as a joke. I assume that this was going to be inevitable, as the questionnaire was primarily posted on facebook. On the other hand, participants who choose to submit ‘white’, as their ethnicity were all young. Five of them, were aged between 16-18, and one person was aged between 19-21. This led me to believe that life experiences and the lack of education may be a factor.

Four of the participants who chose to submit ‘British White’ were from the older generation; therefore indicating they were more knowledgeable and these are the type of participants I will need to attract, to offer opinions and experiences on a qualitative questionnaire.

5. What level of education are you currently at?
The table of contents for the pie chart is presented below. This establishes the fact that all of my participants had or still continuing to have a good level of education.

6. Please specify your occupation.
Eleven out of the twenty-three participants are currently students (43%) and from the remaining 47% of participants, there are only two people who I can assume are not currently working. The person who failed to respond and the female who declared she was a house person. These statistics depict that the 47% of my participants have various life experiences from both within the educational and employment sectors and therefore, if I could attract them to participate in a qualitative questionnaire, I would be able to establish different values and viewpoints they hold for the genre, I intend to produce as my project.

7. Where do you currently live?
Apart from the one participant who offered a silly response, I had quite a span in demographic data. This data will enable me to understand cultural differences from area to area with reference to the analysed data.

8. How regular do you watch films?
This question allowed me to establish how regular my participants liked to view a film. From the recorded data, over half of them admitted to viewing films weekly. However, I took the number of participants that watched films daily, weekly and fortnightly and established that 78% of the respondents watch films more regularly. If this figure is representative of a wider population, then there is a positive need for new films to be produced.

9. What film genres do you enjoy viewing?
I allowed my participants to choose several options. A participant chose to submit dragons for a genre, but I included their recorded data, under the genre for fantasy. The ‘other’ category contained two different opinions:-

Drama

Thriller

Three respondents chose to record the genre ‘Social Realism’. These three people were all young males whose professions were teacher, Project Manager and an undergraduate. This data informs me that all three are highly educated, who may have had previous media experience. Analysing this data, made me realise that the genre ‘Social Realism’ needed more advertisement and that viewers may enjoy the genre as a hybrid.

10. Where do you enjoy watching films?
The recorded data for this question was quite evenly distributed between cinema, DVD and television. The data supplied by the joker participant is not included in the graph, however, the person who chose to submit a different preference; I recorded this under internet, as they recorded Netflix. Viewing material through Netflix is aided by an internet device.

11. What entices you to watch a particular film?
To advertise a ‘Social Realism’ film, I believe all the above forms would benefit the genre, as secondary research indicated that there is a niche market. Although, budgets and supporting finance is restricted, advertising should take a slice of this to promote the product. Also free advertisements could be obtained from local media institutions, such as radio and newspapers.

12. Please comment on what you believe the term 'Social Realism' means?.

Twenty two out of the twenty three participants offered a good interpretation and understating of the genre. However, one young participant had copied and pasted the correct description from Wikipedia. I recognised this immediately, as I myself had previously looked up the correct definition. Therefore, I believed the male aged 16-18, had no prior knowledge of this genre. Some of the responses I received were

Socially accurate
A realistic view of social life
A situational that is realistic in social mediums.

13. Which of the following 'Social Realism' films have you viewed?
The twenty two serious participants had viewed at least one ‘Social Realism’ film, with many of them viewing several. Three participants selected to offer different titles, with one employed female aged 19-21 offering the film titles:

Billy Elliot
The Full Monty
Calendar Girls

An older male aged 31-40 offered the title ‘The Full Monty’, whilst a male participant aged 22-30 offered the title ‘Billy Elliot’. Although, all the above three titles are based on true stories, they are really hybrids of the genre.

Billy Elliot – Musical
The Full Monty – Comedy Drama
Calendar Girls – Comedy Drama

14. Do you find realism films to be accessible?
The six participants who said that Social Realism films were not easily accessible were the ones who had only one or two of the films. I believe this could be down to insufficient advertising. I implemented the option – Do not wish to comment, into the questionnaire as an option, subsequently, as I did not want anyone to feel intimidated with an option suggesting – Don’t Know.

15. Do you feel the need for further realist films?
Thirteen out of my twenty three participants (56%) decided that there should be more realist film, whilst people (26%) chose to not comment. Four out of the six were the same people who chose not to comment on the previous question, therefore depicting a correlation.

16. Could you select any themes/ issues you consider under explored in the market.
Disability, sexual orientation and sexuality were the top three suggestions; however one person decided to offer their own suggestion “Segregation of classes”.

17. Please select types/groups you consider to be under represented in film.

18. Is there any aspect of British social culture that you feel could be well explored?
Nine participants offered an opinion.

Equality as it should be seen. Example, the best candidate for the job, not just because they are of an ethnic minority or a female.
 School life
 Political
 Gender fluidity
We usually see films about the needy or super rich, how about something in between?

 Upper class
 Crime
The positive sides of BDSM, alternative culture, depression (surviving), faith & healing
Social network overtakes social face to face connections

19. Is there any additional information you would like to comment on?
Only two people decided to share their comments:

Gender
Age Range
Education
Comment
Female
 31-40
 Master Degree
Social realist production, seem to always focus on the depressing, negatives of human interaction. There are so many positives in society but no medium has found a way to express this in social realist media.
 Male
 41-50
 College Diploma
Social realist films tend to be dark, isolated and depressing. The lighter side of social interaction is completely missed!
